Taipei Water Department Issues Clarification on Recent Water Outage Reports
In response to recent media reports claiming “four districts in Taipei experiencing consecutive water outages” and “up to seven days without water,” the Taipei Water Department has issued the following clarification: The Taipei Water Department has been continuously replacing and upgrading aging pipelines within its service area to ensure the highest water quality for customers. These pipeline replacement projects are carried out in small work zones, with minimal outage areas. To reduce inconvenience, most scheduled outages take place daily from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., avoiding impact on residents’ routines before work and after returning home. There will never be a case of “seven consecutive days without water supply.” The Taipei Water Department further explained that the majority of buildings within its service area are equipped with water storage tanks, meaning most customers are indirect meter users. These customers can still use water stored in their tanks during the 5–6 hours daily outage. However, a small number of direct meter users (i.e. those without storage tanks) may experience short daily water interruptions and should store water in advance based on their needs. The Taipei Water Department emphasized that pipeline replacement works are conducted using small-scale and short-duration methods to minimize impact on customers. Information on affected areas and outage schedules is posted on the “Water Outage Inquiry” page of the Taipei Water Department’s official website, and shared through regular press releases via the Central News Agency as well as on-site notices to remind residents to store water in advance and minimize impact on water use.
