Continuing last year’s theme centered on sustainability through every drop, the Taipei Water Department is set to launch the 2nd Art Competition. This year’s event aims to expand participation and will open for submissions in mid-June, with the call for entries running through September. The competition is open to elementary school students in middle and upper grades, with the theme focusing on the sustainable use of water resources in daily life.

According to the Taipei Water Department, to encourage creativity among children, last year’s competition invited elementary school students in Taipei to express their ideas about water conservation through art. The initiative aims to instill an awareness of the importance of water sustainability and pass that message on to future generations through creative expression. To showcase these outstanding works more widely to the public, selected pieces were displayed on the digital wall at Exit 4 of MRT Gongguan Station, and in May, the back of Taipei Water utility bill envelopes will feature the winning artworks along with a QR code linking to the full collection, inviting the public to appreciate and engage with the message behind the art.

Last year’s winners shared meaningful insights behind their artwork. Many reflected on how clean water flowing from our taps is not easily obtained—from the gathering of tiny droplets into rivers to the processes of purification and distribution, water is intimately tied to ecological preservation and infrastructure. Their artworks emphasized the value of cultivating water-saving habits, such as turning off the tap while washing hands, choosing showers over baths, and reusing rinse water for watering plants or flushing toilets. Through simple yet powerful everyday actions, we can all contribute to protecting this vital resource.
