With the intensifying effects of Typhoon Kong-rey bringing strong winds and rain to Taipei, Mayor Chiang Wan-an has been closely monitoring the water supply situation in Greater Taipei. Today (October 31), Mayor Chiang visited the Changxing Water Treatment Plant, under the Taipei Water Department, to inspect typhoon preparedness and water supply conditions and to receive a briefing. The Taipei Water Department reported that water supply remains normal. During his visit, the mayor commended the stability of the Feitsui Raw Water Supply Tunnel, which effectively maintains water supply during typhoon-induced heavy rains. He expressed his appreciation for the dedication of on-duty staff and reminded them to prioritize their safety while ensuring a secure water supply for the public.
The Taipei Water Department noted that, as of 3 p.m. today, the raw water turbidity of the Nanshi River had reached approximately 4,600 NTU—over 400 times the usual level. To mitigate typhoon impacts, Feitsui Reservoir’s raw water intake was prepared on the 29th, and use of this source began after the land typhoon alert was issued on the 30th. Current raw water turbidity remains low, around 6 NTU, significantly reducing supply risks and lowering treatment and sludge removal costs.
The Taipei Water Department advises residents to prepare for potential water outages due to power disruptions caused by high winds and recommends storing backup water to minimize inconvenience. With Zhitan Dam and Qingtan Weir continuing their water releases, the public is urged to stay clear of riverbanks.
