On April 8, 2024, at 10:00 a.m., the Taipei Water Department was informed by Ms. Hui-Fen Huang, the borough chief of Xishan Borough, about residents experiencing symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea. In response, immediate action was taken and personnel were dispatched to assist in sampling and testing the water quality of the self-managed water source system in Xishan Borough. The testing process was completed on April 9th, revealing elevated levels of coliform bacteria attributed to the absence of a disinfection process in the system. Ms. Huang, the borough chief, was duly notified and requested to disseminate this information among the residents. It is strongly advised that all water intended for drinking purposes, including for washing utensils and food, be properly boiled prior to use to ensure safety.
Currently, Xishan Borough operates its own self-managed water source system independent of the Taipei Water Department's water supply network. However, as part of its commitment to public health, the Taipei Water Department conducts monthly sampling and monitoring of the water quality within this system. The test results are promptly shared with the Xishan Borough Office, which is responsible for disseminating the information to local residents and ensuring appropriate disinfection measures are taken to maintain water safety and hygiene.
In response to the recent contamination incident, the Taipei Water Department will collaborate with local authorities to inspect water sources and pipelines, aiming to pinpoint potential contamination points. Additionally, on the evening of April 11, four emergency water collection points will be established to provide residents with access to safe water sources while remedial measures are undertaken. And one more emergency water collection points will be established on April 12.
