Taipei Water Department Strengthens Contractor Education to Ensure Protection of City’s Cultural Heritage
Regarding the incident where a construction notice posted by the Taipei Water Department affected the wall of Bangka Qingshui Zushi Temple, the Department has clarified that the notice was related to fire hydrant maintenance in front of No. 151, Section 2, Changsha Street, with road resurfacing scheduled from January 2 to January 7. To prevent parked vehicles from obstructing the scheduled work, the Department posted construction notices to inform the public. However, it failed to recognize that the posting location was a heritage site wall. The Taipei Water Department stated that the inconvenience caused to the temple is deeply regrettable. On the morning of January 3, representatives from the department visited Bangka Qingshui Zushi Temple to apologize. Following the advice of cultural heritage committee members, the Department will engage professional heritage restoration experts to carry out the restoration in compliance with cultural heritage regulations. The Taipei Water Department has reiterated that it will improve construction standard operating procedures (SOPs) and strengthen communication and pre-work education with contractors in the future. These measures aim to ensure cultural heritage protection and preserve the city's invaluable historical memory.
